Wood Fencing Nampa

Depending on the part of the world you live in, a wood fence is the most common and most popular fencing material.  Wood fences come in a variety of different wood types and colors.  The type of wood you choose for your wood fence will determine how long the fence should last.  If you are looking to get a fence installed from a reputable fence contractor, read more below and give us call.

Cedar

A fence made of this type typically will last longer than other wood types.  If taken care of and maintained properly, this material could last as long as 30 years.  Of course with this higher grade and quality lumber, the price for this fence material is going to be more expensive than other wood fence materials.  If it is your desire to have a wood fence that will last, cedar fence might be the best option for your.

Pine

A pine fence is usually a lower cost fence, which according to most should last 5-10 years with proper maintenance.

Treated Pine

A longer lasting more premium option if you wanted pine would be to get treated pine.  Treated pine is more expensive and can stand up to the cold weather.  The prevailing thought is that a treated pine fence can last upwards of 15-20 years or more with proper maintenance.

Other Wood Fencing

A couple of other wood fence types are cypress and spruce.  These fall somewhere in the middle of cedar and pine on the quality and longevity scale.

Wrought Iron Fencing Nampa

Wrought iron fencing is metal that has been heated to the point where it can be hammered and shaped for the desired design.  It is very strong and can handle harsh climates.  It is expensive to purchase and get installed, but it does last a long time.

A wrought iron fence is made of iron and as a result, it is susceptible to rust over time.  Because of this, it requires a fair amount of maintenance to keep it looking its best.  You want to do your best to try and keep objects or plants that could scrape or scratch the iron away.

If the iron is scratched and the iron is exposed to the elements, rusting can occur, which will weaken the fence over time.  You want to apply some sort of protectant to keep moisture from penetrating the iron and causing more issues.  You can and should also apply some sort of paint that will help to seal the iron from the exposure of the elements and also add to its visual appeal.  If you notice large amounts of rust on your fence, you need to rub and scrape off the rust and reapply paint or sealant to protect it from further damage.

This type of material is often good for a pool fence or a dog fence, but does not really function well as a privacy fence.  It does however add charm, style, and decoration to your home.

Aluminum Fencing Nampa

If you want a metal fence but don't want to go as premium as a wrought iron fence would cost, then aluminum fencing might be the way to go for you.  Aluminum is going to share some of the characteristics of wrought iron with pros and cons on both sides.

Pros:

  • Aluminum fencing is a lighter metal and is easier to install than wrought iron.  As a result, the cost of installing this fencing would be less expensive.
  • Aluminum is non corrosive which means it is not going to have surface layer rust appear on the outside of your fence
  • Unlike wrought iron, scratches in aluminum that are exposed to moisture and humidity are not going to cause rust or corrosion
  • Costs less than wrought iron
  • While lighter than wrought iron, it is still strong and able to withstand weather events

Cons:

  • Aluminum can be dented and bent more easily than wrought iron
  • Susceptible to corrosion due to salinity in the air.  Since Nampa is inland, this really shouldn't be too much of a concern in Idaho, but still something we wanted to mention.

Chain Link Fencing Nampa

Chain link fences are typically made out of galvanized steel.  In many places around the world they are ubiquitous.  The reason they are so common is because of their relatively low price for the material and ease of installation.

This type of fence is not good for a privacy fence since you can see right through it, but it can serve well as a pool fence or dog fence.  Since wind and snow can pass through the fence, it is not as prone to be knocked over by the elements.  This type of fence can last around 20 years with proper maintenance.

Vinyl Fencing Nampa

You can tell from the title of this section that this fence goes by many names (Vinyl, PVC, Plastic), but each is referring essentially to the same type of material.  This material has many advantages over wood and steel fences.

Pros:

  • This material does not rust or corrode
  • The vinyl material can be made to look like wood
  • Not affected by rain, sleet, snow, or ice
  • Manufacturers have taken measures to try to counteract the brittleness that this material exhibited early in its creation from prolonged exposure to cold temps.  Prior to this manufacturing improvement, this type of fence could be damaged by hail similar to the way a car windshield or roof might be.  If we happen to get a severe hail storm in Nampa, there is really nothing that can't be damaged due to hail, so it is always important to insure your investments.

Cons:

  • This is suitable material for a privacy fence, but could be susceptible to being knocked down by heavy winds or snow drifts if the slats or pickets are close together.  It is important that posts are installed deep and strong so the fence can hold up to the elements
  • Expensive.  Since this fence requires very little maintenance and can last upwards of 30 years, it can be an expensive up front cost, but one that should outlast and out ease most other fence material options.
